Variable Spring Hanger

Spring hangers are used to support the dead weight of a piping system at a given fulcrum while still allowing movement due to thermal expansion or contraction of the piping system. It is used in places with low thermal displacement, simple structure and low cost.

There are seven types of variable spring hangers. The main difference between the types is in the way they are supported, so the installation details will be different for each type. During assembly, the variable spring coils are pre-compressed to the cold load position and the travel stops are installed.
The travel stops are painted and secured with stainless steel transit straps. While these straps are installed, the load on the equipment, such as a hydraulic test load, will not be transmitted to the spring coil. Therefore, the hydraulic test must be performed with the stops in place. The stops must be removed during installation while the cold load is still on the spring. They are removed by cutting the transit straps.
